Description: A letter sent to the Sisters of Mercy in Grafton about the donation of Private Verdi Schwinghammer’s WWI diary. Also includes frontispiece inscriptions and photo. Private Verdi Schwinghammer enlisted in the 42nd Batallion (known as the Australian Black Watch), 1st A.I.F. in May 1916. He served in France from June 1917 to April 1919.

In March 1944 Sergeant Verdi Schwinghammer wrote to Reverend Mother after he heard she was interested in obtaining a copy of his war diary for “studies” at St Mary’s College, Grafton. He had inscribed the copy of the diary ‘To Rev Mother and Sisters, St Mary’s College, Grafton. With best wishes from Verdi Schwinghammer. Sydney 10/3/1943’. This copy of the war diary was compiled from diaries kept during the war and is now part of the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea – Grafton Archives. Another copy is housed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
